Name: Rex Salazar
Canon: Generator Rex
Original or Alternate Universe: O
Canon Point: S2E13
Number: 006
Setting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generator_Rex
History: Rex was born into a family of brilliant scientists. When he was 10 years old, his mother, father, and teenage brother were commissioned to work on a nanite project. They successfully created micro-machines capable of binding with organic tissue and were excited to have advanced medical science. BUT, the millionaires that had commissioned them had more insidious plans for the nanites (Ie giving themselves super-powers so that they could become gods and rule the world). Unfortunately, it was too late to shut the completed project down, and so Rex's parent's decided to blow up the lab and all of their research. Due to the betrayal of a villainous coworker, they were locked in the lab during detonation and perished.
An unforeseen consequence of the explosion was that billions upon billions of unprogrammed nanites were thrown into the atmosphere, where they circulated around the world before infecting every living thing. The majority of the population (human, animal, and plant) remained unchanged by invasive machines, but in some cases, their cells would mutate. Mutations could end in one of two ways: the effected creature or person would maintain its sense of self and go about their business, or they would become a mindless rage machine bent on smashing and killing everything around them.
In order to counter-act the threat of the Exponentially Variegated Organisms, a global offensive team called Providence was created. Their tactics were simple, kill the EVOs on the spot, or capture them to be taken back to HQ for study and dissection. It was a bleak time for mankind, as no one if or when they or their loved ones would mutate next.
Enter Rex, an amnesiac found in a crater by Providence's top agent, Six. Despite not knowing anything about himself except his name and that he was capable of speaking broken Spanish, Rex was an EVO capable of controlling his mutations, and, with physical contact, deactivating and absorbing the nanites in others. Suddenly, there was a cure.
The show actually begins several years after this point with Rex in Providence’s care. Agent Six is his mentor and supervisor on missions and Dr. Rebecca Holiday is studying him in an attempt to replicate whatever makes him capable of curing others. Unfortunately for Rex, his environment is stifling and sterile. Providence treats him as a weapon more than a teenage boy, and their leader, White Knight, is unconvinced that Rex won’t snap and go full berserk EVO, or betray them somewhere down the road. At this point, Rex is under constant surveillance, is being hidden from the world, only allowed to go out during missions, and he has no friends except a talking chimpanzee EVO (who fits the character trope of the cigar smoking, whiskey drinking criminal with a heart of gold.)
Bored, rebellious, and underappreciated, Rex begins to slip Providence’s collar and disobey orders. He outs himself to the world by charging into a prominent battle in the streets of New York. He ditches his debriefing to go hang with kids his own age. (Where he befriends Noah, who turns out to be a Providence plant. White Knight is nothing if not a thorough micro-manager.) Providence manages to reel him back in by giving him a room fit for a teenager, and allowing him out of the base to visit Noah.
This is an improvement, but it’s clear that they still don’t trust Rex on their next major mission. An EVO is infecting everyone around it with a substance that leaves them in a sort of zombified hivemind state. Mid-battle, White Knight orders bleach protocols to be put in place so that if the EVO or any of the infected try to leave Manhattan, the entire city will be destroyed in order to contain. Rex tries to get them to research the head EVO behind the infection, a man believed to be Peter Meechum. White Knight refuses, and orders them to pull out so that the city can be bleached. They’d seriously rather nuke Manhattan than listen to a suggestion from Rex. It’s p. fucked up. BUT Rex manages to get the necessary information to calm Meechum down (ie, we know somebody kidnapped your daughter. We can help. Please stop fucking rampaging.)
After Manhattan is safe, Rex slips Providence again, and strikes off on his own to puzzle out if it’s even worth it to come back. While out on his improvised vacation, he continues to fight and cure EVO’s, damn near joins a cult, and stops an evil supercomputer from broadcasting a signal that would detonate all nanites simultaneously. Yaay for ending global genocide!
Agent Six tracks him down, but is prepared to cover for him should he choose to live with his weird, loving cult-family. He, of course, chooses to return to Providence.
From then on it’s high-intensity EVO ass-kicking and global conspiracies. The team attempts to track and contain Van Kleiss, an EVO terrorist who manages to consistently fuck shit up and then escape.
Through a series of battles with Van Kleiss, it is uncovered that he was on the original team for the nanite project, and that he was the one that betrayed Rex’s parents and locked them in the lab for the detonation. As it turns out, Van Kleiss had planned on betraying the original sponsors of the project and giving himself the god-like powers so he and he alone could rule the world.
Fairly suddenly in the show (ie, you get the feeling that the producers got a notice that they weren’t getting renewed for another season and so they decided to wrap things up…) Providence falls under the leadership of a woman nicknamed Black Knight, and White Knight, Six, Rex, and Holiday break away from them and their bizarre new take on securing EVOs, which utilizes control collars. They literally start a catch and release program for giant mutated monsters which backfires every time there’s any sort of glitch in the system or physical damage to the collars. The new Providence mostly does this to keep the crew distracted while they’re gathering components of the Master Control Nanite.
Providence is revealed to be funded by the same group of people that funded the nanite project in the first place (gasp!) and they use the gathered components to give themselves power over time, space, gravity, energy… you know. The simple things.
It works… kind of. But each of them only has control over one element, so they have to combine into a Voltron-esque monster in order to get all the perks. They kick Rex’s ass a few times, but in the end, decide that they’ll only be satisfied if they each have all the powers so that they can individually kick Rex’s ass.
They voluntarily get back into the testchambers to have their components extracted and properly redistributed. But SURPRISE, Rex smashes some things, takes all the components himself, and then uses his sweet god-powers to deactivate all the nanites in the world. (Everything from the last 3 paragraphs happens in the same 23 minute episode. this show is a mess and I’m sorry.)
Personality:
Rex’s strength of character is remarkable when you consider that he was raised for 5 years under lock and key by a criminal and an ex-assassin. He could have easily turned out to be a cold, chain-of-command following robot who believed that the ends justified the means. Instead, he’s a compassionate rebel who lets his heart lead.
He outed himself to the world, confident that he would be embraced for the good he was doing instead of being feared for being an EVO. He saved millions of lives every time a bleach protocol was put in place by refusing to follow orders and addressing the issue in a nonviolent manner. (Ie, healing the offending EVO-- and at times, talking them down enough so that they would allow him to heal them.) It may seem strange to use nonviolent to describe a kid who can produce multiple weapons with a thought, but it fits him surprisingly well. Rex is all about kicking EVO ass, but only to incapacitate so that he can heal them. Sentient, non-problematic human EVOs are healed on a case by case basis with consent. When someone kills a flea EVO that he was about to heal, he is ready to smackdown on the triggerhappy asshole. Rex doesn’t believe in taking a life for the sake of taking a life.
That’s not to say that he’s completely opposed when the situation truly calls for it. He struck killing blows to at least two people throughout the course of the show-- one being the leader of the cult that he pseudo-joined. He was relieved when they turned out to be robots, but his shock at the discovery reveals that he struck while still fully believing them to be human. As the fate of the entire world hinged on getting these people(robots) out of the way, it wasn’t a decision made lightly.
On a less heavy note, Rex is a typical teenage boy in a lot of ways. He has a short attention span, poor impulse control, and is loud and fairly messy. On stealthy recon missions, he generally blows his cover by not following orders, investigating things on his own, and in some cases just by being a clutz. In one of the instances where Six brought him back after he ragequit Providence, his only demand was that they (Six, Holiday, Bobo, and himself) sit down and have a family-style dinner every friday night. Despite all the cool powers and the weight of the world on his shoulders, Rex has simple needs.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
smackhands Literal robot hands to smash things.
Hovercycle; fast, fair mobility. Best for outdoor use.
Matter canon; ammunition is whatever solid matter is around. It digs into the ground/pavement/ etc and compresses it into a ball that is launched.
Helipack; best for maneuvering in a vertical sense.
Hoverboard; Quick mobility in tight indoor places.
Sword; sure is a giant sword.
Rex's nanites also work to heal him. Too much damage and he goes catatonic to encourage this healing. Catatonia is not his idea of a good time though.
Communication with machinery: throughout his canon, Rex hacks and communicates with machines via his nanites. He can open doors, shut motors down, etc.
Absorbing nanites. idk how useful that will be here but it's kind of the basis for the show so I guess it's relevant.
Limitations:
All of Rex's powers rely on nanites as building blocks. In canon, he regularly replenishes his supply by healing EVOs and absorbing their active nanites. Without this supply, he'll be stuck producing them with his master control nanite, which is much, much slower.
His builds are also fairly delicate themselves. If they sustain too much damage, they disintegrate and he can't reabsorb those "dead" nanites. The more complex the build (anything for locomotion, especially) the more fragile it is. His sword is much harder to break than his helipack!
There's also an emotional component. If he's under too much stress/starts to feel useless/is worried about what people think/etc his builds tend to get twitchy and give out without warning.

The sweet scent of garlic rushed to meet him as the automatic doors whirred open quietly. He had forgotten that it was meatloaf and mashed potato friday and had contributed Bobo’s absence on the mission to the chimp’s general disapproval toward missions in hot, dry climates. Friday Dinner was still a new tradition, but everyone on his team remained willing participants.
“Dude, it smells amazing,” Rex grinned, his sunburn and sand-infested clothes forgotten as he reached for a piece of steaming garlic bread. Bobo slapped his hand with a spoon before he could make contact.
“Wait til it’s on the table, champ.” Rex earned himself a startled “hey!” when he hoisted the chimp in the air with one robotic hand, and another when he grabbed the garlic bread.
“Rex, did you go to the decontamination chambers before you came up here? You may be infected.” If there was anyone who could stop joviality in its tracks, it was Doctor Holiday.
Rex and Bobo froze their little game of keep away in horror. “Wha-- Doc, you didn’t say anything about--” he cut himself off, dumbfounded when she reached out to pluck the piece of bread from his hand and unflinchingly bit into it.
“Thank you. I am starving and he’s been guarding the food for hours,” she said, reaching past both of them to snag herself a second piece while they stared on in disbelief. “You really should go wash up-- a regular shower and change of clothes would be fine.” Her raised eyebrow finally shook him out of it. He glanced sidelong at the food on the stove, but Bobo’s glare dissuaded him from taking anything else.
“Fine,” he sighed.
“Dinner’s in five, kid,” Bobo called after him. Rex smiled.

Okay, so I kind of get how dimension hopping works, and it’d be stupid to say that it’s impossible. [He gestures around him for emphasis] But everyone keeps talking about nanites all nonchalant! What gives? Has no one turned into a rampaging monster who needs their butts kicked? I’d have thought it would be more of a pressing issue.
